Students from JSEC proudly showcased the newly RIDE-approved Computer Science Pathway at two significant events yesterday: the Junior Achievement event and the School Choice Fair. Their enthusiasm for technology, innovative problem-solving, and commitment to community outreach captured the attention of attendees and demonstrated the exciting opportunities available in this pathway. Students shared their experiences:
We arrived at the Rhode Island Convention Center at 9 am with Ms. Sen, Mr. Lulo, and two classmates. We set up our booth and ensured our self-driving vehicles were working. People from other booths came over, and we went over to their booths to see their robots and exchange ideas and knowledge with each other. People from the industry visited our booth, and it was a proud moment for us to explain our work. By 10 o’clock, students from all over Rhode Island started to arrive. We enthusiastically explained our program and SDV(self-driving vehicle) and passed out flyers. We even let students play with the remote control and our cute bot, cute bot is a mini car with a micro-bit chip in it, which we successfully programmed.
The whole program lasted for three hours. We were thrilled that over 20 students signed up for our pathways from this event. We took turns checking out the other pathways and getting snacks. We also met our friends, counselors, and teachers from middle school.
It was a fantastic experience for us! We did this again in the evening on the same day at Central, from 5 to 7 pm. We presented it to the Providence School students and families this time. It was terrific to see so many middle school students interested in Computer Science. Parents were curious about our pathway and the program. We got over 30 students signed up for our pathway from middle school. We were excited to see our middle school principals and counselors, and they were very proud of us to see us representing our high school.
The event ended at 7 pm. We were glad that we were part of the recruitment team for our pathway. Thanks to our teachers and administrations for supporting us throughout the process!
