Welcome back to school! We hope you’re feeling excited and refreshed after the summer break. Are you looking forward to seeing your friends, teachers, and classmates again? What are your plans for the new semester? Are you going to join a sport, club, activity, or attend JSEC Events? So much excitement for the 2025-2026 School Year are lots of questions to be answered. We thought to share some of the most commonly asked questions with answers to help new and returning students at JSEC:
FOCUS AND THEME OF JSEC LIFE SCIENCES INSTITUTE:
Q1. What is the name of our school and do we have a theme or focus area?
A1. Our new name is the “Juanita Sanchez Life Sciences Institute”. Project-based and work based learning focused on life sciences and bio technology. Partnerships with RI Hospitals, bio-tech startups, and NAF and the new Life Sciences Hub in downtown Providence. Labelling wise we can still go by JSEC (Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex) as it is the name of our building. Our pathways are Biomedical Careers and Computer Science.
ARRIVAL TIMES AND DISMISSAL TIMES:
Q2. What time does school begin and what time does school end?
A2. School begins at 7:45AM and ends at 2:30PM
WHATS NEW THIS YEAR:
*New Scheduling, New Dental Hygienist Program, New WIN/Advisory Period, New Gym Floor, and much more……
BEFORE SCHOOL BREAKFAST DAYS/TIMES:
Q3. Is there breakfast available and if so what time is it served and where?
A3: Yes, 7:15AM-7:45AM, M-F. Breakfast is served in the Cafeteria. Please note you must be in the Cafeteria before 7:45AM to receive breakfast.
TRANSPORTATION:
Q4. Where do I get a bus pass and when?
A4. Bus Passes will be given out the first week of school and students will be called down over the announcements by grade level to pick them up. Usually the first week of school is free where RIPTA doesn’t require a bus pass as they know students will be getting their new 2025-2026 Bus Passes within the first week or two.
PARKING:
Q5. Is there a bike rack or a place to park my car or scooter?
A5. JSEC has bike racks on both sides of the building. Scooters from the companies that rent them may be left on the sidewalk. Students who drive to school must park along sidewalks or in the back of the building behind the gym. Teacher parking lot is for Staff Only.
FORMS TO BE RETURNED TO JSEC:
Q6. What do I do with any forms that I or my parents have to fill out?
A6. Bring ANY and ALL forms that need to be completed with Parent Signature to the main office as soon as possible. Forms include: Nurses Medical Forms, Internet Usage Form, Lunch Forms, Photo Form, etc……

Q7. Did our schedule change for this school year?
A7. Schedules/Bell Times have changed from last year to this year and there will regular schedule. Please see schedule below and here is a summary of how schedule will rotate:
*Mondays, *Wednesdays, and *Fridays: All students will attend 7 classes with each being 51 minutes long
*Tuesdays: All students will attend 4 classes with each class being 90 minutes long
*Thursdays: All students will attend 3 classes with and added Advisory/WIN Block.
This schedule will be reviewed with you within the first few days of student orientation. If you have any questions regarding the rotating schedule please see any teacher for assistance. Individual schedules should be sent to students prior to the first day of school or they will receive their schedules on the first day of school. Students can see their schedules on Skyward.

HOME ROOMS/ADVISORY PERIODS:
Q8. Do we have Home Rooms or Advisories?
A8. While students do not have “Home Room” classes they do have Advisory Blocks. See individual schedules for Advisory Schedules. Students must follow schedule and attend advisory classes. Please note students must have Naviance Tasks completed prior to graduation. Students must complete Naviance Tasks weekly and is a graduation requirement. Naviance will be worked on by advisees during Advisory Periods. (Students may use Chromebooks, PC’s, or Phones to complete Naviance Tasks) as directed by Advisory Teacher.
PHONE POLICY:
Q9. What is the phone policy @ JSEC?
A9. Students are not permitted to use their phones during class time unless it is guided by their teachers and utilized in some type of instructional unit by their teacher. Phones should not be used for social media specifically but not limited to: Tik Toc, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Video Gaming, etc…..during class time. Any/all phone usage must be approved by teacher and must be used for educational/class related purpose.
LUNCH:
Q10. What time is lunch?
A10. See daily schedule to see which lunch you are scheduled for. Lunches are determined by your class location.
A-Lunch: 1st Floor and 3rd Floor
B-Lunch: 2nd Floor & Gym
PASS POLICY:
Q11. What is the pass policy?
A11. From 7:45AM-2:30PM students should be in their perspective classes. Any students not in their class must have a written pass from their teacher that states the date, time, point of origin, and point of destination. Exceptions for this will be lunch time where students do not need a pass or if students is being dismissed early and is leaving building.
Students must use a Google Form this year, complete it fully, then once complete must have official permission from teacher to proceed to travel to said location.
Bathroom Usage: Upon arriving to bathroom students must sign in to computer then and only after sign in to the computer located in front of the bathroom. This is done so bathroom usage is not abused. Students will need to enter their student ID # to enter bathrooms.
BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS/CLUBS:
Q12. Are there before or after school programs or clubs?
A12. Before/Afterschool Programs will begin approximately beginning the end of September and have 3 sessions throughout the year. Sign-Ups will be at lunches or you can sign up with the Teacher/Instructor directly.
PASA approximate session dates are:
- Fall 2025: September 29th – December 7th, 2025
- Winter 2025:January 21st – April 4th, 2025.
- Spring 2025: April 21st – May 31st, 2025
Please note you must work with PASA/HUB with info/sign-ups as these are not JSEC Programs but PASA/HUB Programs and all forms, sign-ups, registrations, etc…must be done through them.
PICTURE DAY:
(For School ID’s, Yearbook Photo, & Admin Student Identification)
Q. 14. When is school picture day?
A. 14. Fall Original picture day on 10/08/25. Make-Up photos on 12/10/25. All students must have their photo taken for identification purposes, yearbook photo, and administration records. If there is a specific reason you cannot have your photo taken or if parents/guardians do not want any student photographed then that must be noted with the JSEC office/Yearbook Advisor prior to Photo Day.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Q. 15. Do we have Pep Rallies and special events?
A. 15. We have several special events, pep rallies,field trips, guest presenters, dances, celebrations, etc…..Some are school wide and others are within classes or special groups. Students must be in good academic standing to attend in most school wide events and activities. Most external events not occuring @ JSEC facility do require parental/guardian signature for students to attend. Field trips forms will also be given out as needed and no child will be permitted to attend field trips without a signed permission from by parent/guardian.
SPORTS OFFERED HERE AT JSEC:
Q. 16. Which sports are offered here at JSEC?
A. 16. Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Basketball, Girl’s Soccer, Boy’s Soccer, Girl’s Cross Country, Boy’s Cross Country, Girl’s Volleyball, Boy’s Volleyball, Co-Ed Wrestling, Girl’s Softball, Co-Ed Football, Co-Ed Indoor Track, Co-Ed Outdoor Track, and Unified Basketball. Please see any PE/Health Teacher or the Athletic Director prior to season starting to sign up. All potential players/athletes must be medically cleared prior to joining any sport. Also please note student athletes must be passing the majority of their classes to play any/all JSEC sports team.
GIRLS SPORTS: Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, & Softball.

Q. 17. How do I sign-up for any sports?
A. 17. There will be signs at the gym doors with dates, times, contacts, etc….related to seasonal sports. Students can also contact the Athletic Director for specific details
SPORTS MEDICAL
Q.18. Do I need any type of medical form completed prior to playing a sport?
A. 18 You will need a current sport physical every 13 months for any/all sports you will be participating in. This means if you played a sport last year you will need a new one this year. New athletes and past year athletes must ensure their physicals are submitted to their coaches.

Q. 19. What are the rules at JSEC?
A. 19. The Student Code of Conduct serves a number of important purposes:
• It sets expectations for student behavior on school property, at school events and on transportation to
and from school.
• It establishes standards of personal conduct for all students.
• It supports the development of ethically sensitive and responsible students.
• It recognizes that students are a vital part of the school community and should have healthy
relationships with the school.
• It provides guidelines for consequences depending on the severity of the infraction and recommends
interventions for problem behaviors.
